Chinese EV giant BYD and shipbuilder China Merchants have delivered the world’s largest capacity car carrier, BYD Shenzhen. The vessel, named on April 22 in Yizheng, China, will soon embark on its maiden voyage to Brazil.

Designed by Deltamarin, BYD Shenzhen can carry 9,200 cars across 16 decks, surpassing the previous record holder, Höegh Autoliner’s Höegh Aurora. The 16,300 dwt ship features LNG-fueled engines, a hybrid 1 MW battery system, and advanced technologies for efficiency and sustainability.
Part of BYD’s $687 million investment in a fleet of eight car carriers, BYD Shenzhen supports the company’s growing global sales, particularly in Brazil, where sales jumped 328% in 2024.

The car carrier market continues to expand rapidly, with Wallenius Wilhelmsen set to launch Shaper-class vessels with capacities of up to 11,300 units starting next year.
